EXPERT INTERVIEW

We spoke with Maioro Barton, an after-school programme co-ordinator for Sport Waikato about how we can provide an inclusive learning environment for students with disabilities. 

MAIORO BARTON

Maioro was born with spina bifida which means he will be in a wheelchair for his entire life. He works at Sport Waikato and is the co-ordinator for an after-school programme that helps young people with intellectual, physical and sensory disabilities. He is also involved with Parafed and often visits schools with wheelchairs to enable students to experience wheelchair basketball and hear his story. At the age of 14 he become the youngest member to be a part of the New Zealand under-20 wheelchair basketball team. He has recently been nominated in the community spirit category of the New Zealand Pride Awards for his work.
